Learn more about our Big Hairy Audacious Goals

It's called a BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goal). Seriously, this is a thing. There's even a BHAG Wiki page detailing exactly what it is. Here at the Shakespeare Tavern, our BHAG's generally revolve around our Mission:

  • Produce ALL of Shakespeare's plays
  • Introduce Shakespeare to 15,000 NEW patrons this year.
  • Produce FOURTEEN plays a season
  • Employ a fulltime professional acting company year-round at a living wage, with insurance and benefits
  • Attract visitors to the Shakespeare Tavern from ALL 50 states this year
  • Bring Shakespeare into the lives of 20,000 K-12 students in seven states in the next 12 months
  • All of these started out as BHAGS and then simply became what we do EVERY year!

It's not easy

It's true we EARN 66% of our $1.9 million budget through ticket sales, concessions, tuitions and program fees. It's also true we must raise a third of our budget each year; that's $627,000 this year . . . to stay in business and continue the work we do, both onstage and in the classroom.

Yes, we are privileged to receive funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, City of Atlanta's Office of Cultural Affairs, The Georgia Council for the Arts, and The Fulton County Arts Council. We also receive matching gifts from Coca-Cola, Bank of America, IBM, Norfolk Southern, BellSouth, AT&T, and others. In Atlanta, we are fortunate to have the Metro Arts Fund and a host of Foundations who care about Arts & Culture as well.

You would think that would be sufficient . . . but here's the thing:

Every year the Atlanta Shakespeare Company receives MORE support from individuals like you than ALL of those other sources combined!

And that support is primarily through our Fall and Spring Annual Fund Drives. I've said it before and I will continue to say it, because it's true:

"Great Theater happens only with the participation of a passionate intelligent audience".

That would be you!

For us to succeed, a great many good people must give a few dollars and a good many people will have to give a good bit more. (Again . . . that would be you!)

So help us if you can, by chipping in whatever you can: $10, $25, $50, $100, $250, $500 or even more if you can swing it.*

Our work continues no other way!

*All gifts to Atlanta Shakespeare Company’s Annual Fund are 100% tax deductible!

What is the Shakespeare Tavern®?

The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse is unlike other theaters. It is a place out of time; a place of live music, hand-crafted period costumes, outrageous sword fights with the entire experience centered on the passion and poetry of the spoken word. With a Ready To Eat Café-Style Menu and a broad selection of Irish ales and premium brews, the Shakespeare Tavern® is a place to eat, drink, and nourish the soul. Read what our actors, directors and staff have to say about the work we do at The Shakespeare Tavern® on our Community Blog.. Watch the video below for a complete look at the Tavern Experience!

ASC is a true gem in our community. They not only provide year-round quality theatre, but their Educational opportunities are wondrous. We started taking our daughter to shows when she was 5 and at 15 she remains a huge fan, as do her many friends.

Patricia Griffith, Atlanta

The Tavern continues to draw us in. We love to attend the plays and be drawn back into a world so rich in language, plot, emotion and themes. What a wonderful resource for people of all ages, a touchstone for those interested in literature, drama, history and art.

Karen Wibell, Rutledge GA

I have been to over 90 countries and across all those locations, The Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse has become my favourite place to spend an evening.
